TEXT 1 There is a new department store in our town. It is at the end of the main road. I buy a newspaper there everyday. This big store is open everyday, even Sunday. It is always busy on Sunday. A lot of people like to go shopping on Sunday. They sell milk, eggs, biscuits, tea, sugar, and coffee. You can get aspirin, toothpaste, or a writing pad there. You can also get other things such as clothes, shoes, and cosmetics. You can even buy fruits and vegetables. Although there are many things in the store, you can find the things you need easily. You can find shoes in the shoe department and vegetables at the vegetable stalls. You can use a trolley when you need to carry too many things. It is really a very big store in our town. TEXT 2 In football game, some people do not play the game. They have important roles in a football game. They are the coach, referee, linesmen, and the spectators. The coach trains the players how to play the game. The referee controls the match. One gro

But he knew Crocodile might be waiting underwater to eat him. Mouse Deer had an idea. He said out loud, “I wonder if the water’s warm. I’ll put in my leg and find out.” But Mouse Deer didn’t put in his leg. Instead, he picked up a stick with his mouth and put in one end. Chomp! Crocodile grabbed the stick and pulled it underwater. Mouse Deer laughed. “Stupid Crocodile! Don’t you know a stick from a leg?” And he ran off to drink somewhere else! Another day, Mouse Deer went back to the river. All he saw there was a floating log. But he knew Crocodile looked like a log when he floated. Mouse Deer had an idea. He said out loud, “If that log is really Crocodile, it won’t talk. But if it’s really just a log, it will tell me.” He listened. A rough voice said, “I’m really just a log.” Mouse Deer laughed. “Stupid

PASSIVE vs ACTIVE VOICE

How to compare passive and active voice? English teachers like myself love to warn new writers against the evils of passive voice. Here at Daily Writing Tips, Michael has written about passive writing , and I recently wrote about dummy subjects , but it looks like there’s still some confusion about passive voice and its use. For more on passive vs. active sentence construction, I turn to two books that should be staples in any writer’s library: William Zinsser’s On Writing Well , and Constance Hale’s Sin and Syntax . First, let’s review what passive voice is. In most sentences, we have a subject performing an action. For example: Jason threw the ball. “Jason” is the subject. In a passive sentence, the subject of the sentence is acted upon rather than performing the action, as in: The ball was thrown by Jason. “The ball” is the subject and it is being acted upon. Verbs in the passive voice have two parts: some form of the verb “to be” and a past participle form of the actio

VOCABULARY: "Vocabulary and Movement"

Do you find some words at English very difficult to learn. It is because of your opinion that learning vocabulary of English words is very complicated. Here is the idea how to come across your problem. So many students waste time trying to memorize English vocabulary. They study long lists of vocabulary. They repeat the lists many times, trying to memorize the English words and their translated meanings. Research shows that 80% of vocabulary learned in this way is forgotten in less than a year. That’s a lot of wasted time and effort. There’s another problem with this vocabulary learning method– it’s boring and therefore it kills long term motivation. Students must be very careful– killing your motivation is the worst thing you can do. Learning English is a marathon, it’s a long run. It requires high levels of motivation that are sustained for many years. Using boring vocabulary learning methods, therefore, is doubly bad: it is inefficient and it weakens motivation. There is a better wa

LEARNING ENGLISH BY POEMS

POEM FOR LEARNING ENGLISH English.............. Yach! Sometime it sounds so screamed and most of students say it's difficult subject at school. They always say "We never understand at all because we are poor with English words and utterances". It means that most of students do not understand about English words' meaning. They find some difficulties how to translate or get the meaning of them. They must change their view about English. They must change the way to study at English. Here one of the ways how to learn English more interesting. POEM 1 : LET ME BE ALONE Let me be alone In the corner of my room In a quiet place where no light can reach me Don`t want any persons Don`t want any lights Don`t want any sounds Nothing can`t be done Nothing can`t be said Just me and darkness The ray of hope is no longer exist to me I don`t expect they to come to me anymore Just like this, is enough to me Curl in the shadow of darkness But

NEWTON'S FIRST LAW

In a previous chapter of study , the variety of ways by which motion can be described (words, graphs, diagrams, numbers, etc.) was discussed. In this unit (Newton's Laws of Motion), the ways in which motion can be explained will be discussed. Isaac Newton (a 17th century scientist) put forth a variety of laws which explain why objects move (or don't move) as they do. These three laws have become known as Newton's three laws of motion. The focus of Lesson 1 is Newton's first law of motion - sometimes referred to as the law of inertia . Newton's first law of motion is often stated as An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force . There are two parts to this statement - one which predicts the behavior of stationary objects and the other which predicts the behavior of moving objects. The two parts are summarized in the following diagram. The

KINDS OF TEXT (GENRE) FOR SMP

TEXT 1 WISE WATER LAUNDRY Choose one that has a high water efficiency rating, when purchasing a washing machine. Choose a front loading washing machine which uses up to 60 percent less water, 30 percent less energy and 50 percent less detergent compared to top loading machine.
